Check out the video below of Calgary Flames defenseman Dennis Wideman crosschecking a referee last night in the Flames game against the Nashville Predators.
Wideman had just been the recipient of a pretty hard hit from one of the Preds and was skating to the bench. That’s when he connected from behind with linesman Don Henderson, sending him crashing into the boards. Wideman was not penalized and said after the game that he was distracted, had his head down and did not mean to hit the referee. But after watching the video, you’ll see that his head was definitely up and it definitely appeared intentional.
We’ll just assume that some type of punishment will come down from the NHL any day now.
