Sheriff Deputies stop vehicle traveling wrong way on interstate

At 4:42am this morning, dispatch received a call from a motorist reporting a vehicle traveling the wrong way on Interstate 90 near MM78 (New Underwood).

A Box Elder police officer attempted a vehicle stop but was unsuccessful. Additional calls for backup were made and Pennington County Deputies spiked the vehicles tires at MM67.

At the same time, the SD Highway Patrol and Rapid City Police Department shut down the interstate between MM61-64 for public safety reasons.

Meanwhile, the car continued to drive with damaged tires and a decision was made to attempt a tactical vehicle intervention or TVI. A Sheriff Deputy tapped the bumper of the fleeing vehicle with his own, causing it to spin to a stop. The maneuver was successful and no one was injured.

Marguerite Martin, 51, of Edgemont, SD, was arrested and taken to the Pennington County Jail. She was charged with aggravated eluding and driving on the wrong side of the road.

Once again, this incident highlighted the excellent cooperation of multiple law enforcement agencies in preventing a potential tragedy on our local roadways.
