Sheriff’s Office investigates stabbing

Shortly after 3:00 pm on January 31, 2017 a Pennington County Sheriff’s Office School Resource Officer was called to 401 Don Williams Drive in Box Elder for a report of a stabbing.

Upon further investigation, it was determined a nine-year-old juvenile had stabbed a ten-year-old juvenile in the leg with a pocket knife following a disagreement.  The ten-year-old’s injuries required medical care but were not life threatening. Both juveniles are students in the Douglas School System.

Pursuant to South Dakota Codified Laws 22-3-1 and 26-8C-2, juveniles under ten years of age cannot be arrested for a delinquent act.  Further school disciplinary measures will be addressed through the Douglas School System according to the district policies.

The Pennington County Sheriff’s Office and the Douglas School District remain committed to the safety of all students/staff and will pursue accountability for those whose actions are contrary to this.
