Stolen Vehicle

On June 7th at around 6:20 p.m., police responded to 353 Fairmont Boulevard for a report of a vehicle that was just stolen from the location. The suspect was described as a tall male with a large build. As police responded to the location to take the report, another officer in the area spotted the SUV parked on the north side of 310 E. Fairmont Boulevard. The license plate was confirmed as the stolen vehicle and police observed a male matching the suspect description walking toward the vehicle. He is identified as 38-year-old Daris Hayes of Rapid City (a wanted DOC parole absconder who had recently cut off his parole ankle monitor bracelet). As soon as Hayes observed police, he began walking away from the officer. He continued to ignore commands to stop and began reaching into his pockets. The officer drew his pistol and ordered Hayes to get on the ground. Hayes continued to ignore commands as he got into the SUV and started it. The officer fired three times at the vehicle’s tire, successfully deflating the tire and keeping the vehicle immobilized. The officer attempted to pull Hayes from the driver’s seat. As the officer continued to wrestle with Hayes, an assisting officer was able to successfully use a Taser to subdue Hayes, and he was pulled from the vehicle before being handcuffed. After being evaluated medically, Hayes was placed under arrest for Felony Theft of a Motor Vehicle, Obstruction, and a Parole Warrant.

We’re extremely thankful that our officers remained safe in this incident and that a potentially dangerous pursuit with a parole absconder was averted by our officer’s actions.
