Traffic Stop/Drug Arrest

On June 24th at around 7:22 p.m., an officer observed a Chevy Impala in the area of East Boulevard and Omaha Street. The officer noticed that the vehicle had temporary dealer tags that appeared to have been altered. A traffic stop on the car was conducted in the parking lot of 11 New York Street. Police made contact with the driver, 29-year-old Nathan Smith of Rapid City. Through the course of the traffic stop, police determined that Smith did not have a valid driver’s license or proof of insurance. He was cited for Driving Under Suspension, No Proof of Insurance, and Alteration of a License Plate. A tow truck was called to the location to tow the vehicle from the scene. During the pre-tow inventory of the vehicle, police located a snort-tube, several baggies containing a substance which field-tested positive for methamphetamine, a digital scale, a collapsible baton, and a container with marijuana inside. A urinalysis on Smith came back positive for methamphetamine. Following these discoveries, Smith was placed under arrest for the additional charges of Possession of a Controlled Substance, Distribution of a Controlled Substance, Ingestion of a Controlled Substance, and Possession of Marijuana.
