An Amazon Echo smart speaker has been credited with calling 911 to alert police to an incident in which a woman was being beaten by her boyfriend in Tijeras, NM.
According to a police report, a couple was house sitting for friends when the woman received a text message. The man accused her of cheating and then said that he would kill her if she called the cops. This triggered the Echo to call 911, which caused the police to call the woman’s cell phone to see if everything was OK.
After a two-hour-long standoff with the SWAT team, the man was arrested and is facing 14 charges, including false imprisonment, aggravated battery and possession of a firearm by a felon. He’s being held without bond.
