Traffic Stop

At around 3:00 a.m. on July 11th, police observed a passenger vehicle travelling at an extremely high rate of speed southbound on Jackson Boulevard. The officer’s radar clocked the vehicle’s speed at 86 miles-per-hour in a 35 mile-per-hour zone. The officer turned around and initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle. The vehicle came to a stop in the area of Jackson Boulevard and 32nd Street. The officer made contact with the driver, identified as 19-year-old Rebecca Panych of Box Elder.

The officer noted the odor of both marijuana and an alcoholic beverage coming from inside the car. She was detained while a search of the vehicle was conducted, and the officer noted the strong smell of an alcoholic beverage coming from her person. The vehicle search turned up marijuana, associated paraphernalia, and an unexploded firework inside the vehicle. Throughout the investigation, Panych continued to become increasing uncooperative and even attempted to kick an officer in the face. Eventually, police had to place her in the WRAP safety restraint system before transporting her to the Pennington County Jail, where she threatened to kill the officer. Ultimately, Panych was arrested for Reckless Driving, DUI (2nd), Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Resisting Arrest, Simple Assault on Law Enforcement, Threatening Law Enforcement, Possession of Fireworks, Driving Under Suspension, Failure to Surrender a Suspended License, and No Proof of Insurance.
