Vehicle vs. Pedestrian Crash

At around 11:00 p.m. on September 14th, police were dispatched to the area just north of 5thStreet’s intersection with Main Street for a report of a pickup truck that had just struck a pedestrian. On arrival, police located a male laying in the roadway unresponsive. The man was transported the Rapid City Regional Hospital for serious injuries. After making contact with witnesses, police determined the pedestrian was crossing 5th Street from west to east just north of Main Street. A passenger vehicle in the left northbound lane of 5th Street observed the pedestrian and stopped. A pickup truck following the passenger vehicle entered the right lane and began to pass the passenger vehicle stopped for the pedestrian. The truck then collided with the pedestrian. Police made contact with the driver of the pickup, identified as 73-year-old Darrell Speck of Rapid City. Police noted the smell of an alcoholic beverage coming from Speck’s person along with his slurred speech. Following a DUI investigation, Speck was placed under arrest for DUI. Police also believe the pedestrian was intoxicated at the time of the crash.
