Letterman Accepts An Award And Ends His Speech With An Important Quote About Patriotism (Video)

David Letterman paved the way for comedians and late night hosts and was awarded for his work this past Sunday.

Letterman received the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor and was honored by celebrity colleagues such as Steve Martin, Martin Short and Jimmy Kimmel. Like any awards show, there was political commentary and of course jokes about President Trump.

By the end of the night, Letterman received his award, he ended his speech with a poignant quote by Mark Twain himself.

“There’s a million quotes from Mark Twain and I’m going to wrap this up now with a quote. And I hope I get it correct,” said Letterman. “Patriotism, is supporting your country all the time and supporting your government when it deserves it.”

We appreciate that he wasn’t making an outward joke about our government, but rather a subtle nod. Congrats, Letterman.
