Weapons Call

On October 28th at around 10:25 a.m., police were dispatched to the 4600 block of Steamboat Circle for a report of a male suspect firing a gun in the neighborhood. As police arrived, officer observed a pickup truck leaving the address the incident was reported at. A felony-level stop on the vehicle was conducted on Chapel Lane. The driver, later identified as 29-year-old Dayne Sturlaugson of Rapid City, was ordered out of the truck. He was taken into custody. Police noted the strong smell of an alcoholic beverage coming from his person. Following a DUI investigation, it was determined Sturlaugson was too impaired to drive. An open can of beer was also located in the truck. In the meantime, police spoke with witnesses and determined the incident began when Sturlaugson arrived at the Steamboat Circle address, walked up to a resident of the address, and pointed a gun at the resident. Two other occupants of the home intervened and told Sturlaugson he needed to leave. Sturlaugson left, but several minutes later, he returned and started firing his handgun. Several rounds struck the residence. After Sturlaugson was taken into custody, a search warrant was requested and granted for his residence. There, police located marijuana and associated distribution materials. All-in-all, Sturlaugson was placed under arrest for three counts of Aggravated Assault, Discharge of a Firearm at a Structure, Possession of Loaded Firearm while Intoxicated, Open Container in a Motor Vehicle, DUI (4th), Possession of Marijuana with Intent to Distribute, and Expired License Plates.
