Pursuit

On January 11th at around 1:25 a.m., police observed a vehicle which was not maintaining its lane in the area of Sheridan Lake Road and Canyon Lake Drive. A traffic stop was attempted, but the suspect vehicle did not stop. A pursuit began and travelled generally eastbound, entered the downtown area, and then headed westbound back toward the area of The Gap. While westbound on Main Street, the vehicle attempted to turn southbound onto Hall Avenue, but lost control and drove onto the sidewalk near 1925 W. Main Street before coming to a stop. The suspect driver exited the vehicle and began running to the west. He was apprehended shortly after exiting the vehicle. The driver, later identified as 36-year-old Andrew Gillespie of Deadwood, was placed in handcuffs and police noted the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his person. A container with marijuana inside was located during a pre-tow inventory of the vehicle. Gillespie was placed under arrest for DUI (3rd offense), Aggravated Eluding, Obstruction, and Possession of Marijuana.
