Last week during the opening ceremonies of the Olympics, Katie Couric said something so ridiculous that she is being mocked mercilessly by everyone on the internet for it. While The Netherlands was entering, Couric had an interesting explanation as to why they’ve been so dominant in speed skating. She said that skating is an important mode of TRANSPORTATION in The Netherlands. What?! She went on to say that Amsterdam has lots of canals that freeze over, so the Dutch skate on them “to get from place to place, to race each other, and also to have fun.” This is all complete nonsense. The Netherlands is dominant in speed skating because of a culture focused on winter sports, and because of heavy investment in competitive skating. But Katie was close.
You just can’t make this up.
