After the shooting last week at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida where 17 students and teachers lost their lives there has been nonstop investigation and revelations.
One of the most recent revelations is that the school deputy officer, Scot Peterson has resigned and subsequently retired from his position after being suspended for failing to do his duty on that awful day.
Security footage showed (now former) Deputy Peterson take his position outside of the school but “never went in” while gunman Nikolas Cruz opened fire.
Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel said what Peterson should have done was, “Went in. Address the killer. Kill the Killer.”
At first Peterson was suspended without pay, after just four years ago he was recognized as “school resource officer of the year.” As he was reaching retirement-age anyways, Peterson has resigned and is now under investigation.
To make it worse, the Broward Sheriff’s Office had received multiple tips about the potential danger Cruz presented to the community and the school. In the past 10 years, they had received 23 calls about Cruz alone with warning signs like a family member calling back in November to report Cruz had rifles and police never even filed a report. The BSO also even received a tip specifically saying Cruz could be “a school shooter in the making.”
As Scot Israel said in his announcement, the revelation made him feel devastated and sick to his stomach and we agree. Students, teachers and coaches paid the ultimate price to help save others and the people whose job it is to protect and serve, failed them.
