As the great Forrest Gump once said, “Stupid is as stupid does.” Others have also said, “You can’t fix stupid.” And the man in this news story is living proof of that.
Don Abrego just needed to be different. He couldn’t get a dog or a cat as a pet. He needed something unique. So after an online search, he decided that his pet would be a capuchin monkey. He was able to track one down and agreed on a price with an online seller, but that’s when things got weird.
Abrego never saw the monkey in person, but still decided to go through with the purchase. He then proceeded to send the seller between $4,500 and $5,000 in Amazon gift cards, purchased at CVS and Walgreens, as payment for the monkey. He also paid partially using Western Union and PayPal. You may be shocked to find out that Abrego never received his pet monkey, and now he’s out five grand. Abrego says that the store employees even warned him about the scam when he was purchasing the gift cards, but he went through with it anyway!
Perhaps the funniest twist in this whole story? Abrego asked the seller to identify themselves by sending a photo of their driver’s license. The photo that they sent was a slightly altered screenshot from the movie Superbad, where the character Fogell got a fake ID saying his name was “McLovin.”
Abrego was able to get back the money he sent through PayPal, about $400. Looks like the rest of his money is gone for good and he still has no monkey to show for it.
