Congressman Billy Long Brings Up ‘Facemash’ In Questioning Mark Zuckerberg (Video)

During Mark Zuckerberg’s senate hearing yesterday, Congressman Billy Long wanted to raise a point about Zuckerberg’s roots in developing Facebook as well as the lack of regulation that got him there.

Long posed the question, “What was Facemash, and is it still up and running?”

Facemash was the website that some could argue was a precursor to Facebook in that it took pictures of students from Harvard and gave other students the ability to rate if those people were either hot or not.

Though Zuckerberg says the two are completely unrelated, Long is raising the point that there was never regulation by the government when it came to either one of the sites.

Long used the interaction as a chance to warn Zuckerberg about the powers of congress. He says that with congress there is no real grey area. Either they do nothing, or they tend to overreact.

“So far, we’ve done nothing on Facebook since your inception in that Harvard dorm room, many years ago. We’ve done nothing on Facebook, said Long, “We’re getting ready to overreact, so just take that as a shot across the bow warning to you.”

Basically Long told him he needs to make changes before they throw the whole book in his face…they could maybe call it, Facebook.
