Southwest Airlines Flight Makes Emergency Landing After Engine Explosion (Video)

Southwest Airlines passengers experienced the ultimate worst nightmare of flying when an engine exploded on a flight from New York to Dallas yesterday.

The engine is said to have suffered from “metal fatigue” causing the engine to explode and the debris to shatter a nearby window.

As if that wasn’t horrific enough, 43-year-old married mother of two, Jennifer Riordan was sucked halfway out and pulled back in by other passengers. Unfortunately Riordan did not survive after being taken to the hospital but is the only fatality of the tragic accident.

In spite of the horror and chaos, pilot Tammie Jo Shults stayed calm and landed the plane safely. Shults actually was a Navy pilot and one of the first female F-18 pilots in history, now with this under her belt she is not only a badass but a true hero.

As the plane was making the emergency landing in Philadelphia, passenger Marty Martinez decided to take to Facebook Live, which seemed weird at first but his reasoning makes sense.

“”I had WiFi, and I knew I couldn’t get any sort of text messages through, so I jumped on Facebook Live,” Martinez said in an interview with CBSN. “I thought I was cataloging the last moments of my existence the whole way … It was absolutely terrifying.”

This situation is the first death stemming from an in-flight accident on a U.S. airliner since 2009, but nevertheless we wish the best to the survivors and our thoughts are with the family of Jennifer Riordan.
