Traffic Stop

On June 4th at around 8:10 p.m., a K9 officer observed a passenger vehicle driving westbound on West Main Street with expired license plates. The vehicle turned to head southbound on Jackson Boulevard and a traffic stop was conducted on the vehicle. The car pulled over onto Judy Avenue and the driver immediately opened the door and ran from the scene. The K9 officer ordered the male driver to stop and warned him that the K9 would be used if he kept running. The driver continued running from the scene and the K9 was sent after him. The K9 bit the suspect and brought him to the ground. As the driver began to cooperate, the K9 was called off of the bite and the suspect was handcuffed. He was identified as 36-year-old George Schmidt of Rapid City and it was determined he had active warrants for his arrest. He was placed under arrest for Driving Under Suspension, Obstruction, and his Warrants.
