Traffic Stop

On July 1st at around 2:00 a.m., police observed a Ford F-150 pickup that failed to stop correctly at the intersection of Saint Joseph Street and West Boulevard. As it turned right to head south on West Boulevard, it did not run into the correct lane. The vehicle was stopped by police near West Boulevard’s Intersection with Kansas City Street. Police made contact with the driver and identified him as 37-year-old Parrish Cornelius of Rapid City. Police noted the strong smell of an alcoholic beverage coming from his person. After unsuccessfully completing field sobriety tests, Cornelius was advised that he was being placed under arrest for DUI. As he was about to be placed in handcuffs, Cornelius turned and ran from the officer. His direction of travel was called out and other units in the area responded to assist in apprehending him. An open alcohol container was located in the vehicle. Cornelius was later located in the parking lot of 300 6th Street and began running westbound when he saw police. After a short foot pursuit, police were able to catch up to him near 7th Street. He was ordered to the ground but did not comply. Police took him to the ground and he was put into handcuffs. Cornelius was placed under arrest for DUI (2nd), Obstruction, Resisting Arrest, Open Container in a Motor Vehicle, and Driving without a Valid License. He was transported to the Pennington County Jail.
