Traffic Stop/K9 Bite

On July 7th at around 10:30 p.m., police observed a GMC SUV travelling north on Milwaukee Street with a non-illuminated license plate light. The vehicle turned east onto E. North Street and a traffic stop was attempted on the SUV. The SUV did not stop, turned south onto Waterloo Street, then west onto E. Denver Street before pulling over. The driver exited the vehicle and ran from the scene. His clothing description and direction of travel were called out over the radio, and other units quickly formed a perimeter around the area. Two K9 units also responded to the area to help track the suspect. As police closed in on the suspect, officers made loud commands for the suspect to come out of hiding or the dog would be sent after the suspect. These commands were ignored, and the police K9 located the suspect hiding in some tall grass in the 300 block of E. New York Street. The suspect was bit before informing police he was ready to comply. He was placed into handcuffs and identified as 31-year-old Daniel Martin of Batesland. In the meantime, police located several other individuals in the vehicle. They were called out of the SUV and detained. A search of the vehicle turned up numerous open alcohol containers. A container of marijuana wax was located in the SUV. It was determined that the marijuana wax belonged to one of the occupants, identified as 42-year-old Jerry Brewer of Rapid City. A urinalysis for Brewer would test positive for methamphetamine and THC. Brewer was placed under arrest for Possession of a Controlled Substance, Ingestion of a Controlled Substance, Ingestion of a Substance (Excluding Alcohol) to Intoxicate. Martin would be placed under arrest for Eluding, Obstruction, Open Container in Motor Vehicle, and two Warrants. Both would be taken to the Pennington County Jail.
