Serena Williams Accuses Umpire Of Sexism, Receives $17,000 In Fines For Violations In Loss To Naomi Osaka (Video)

Serena Williams lost in the finals of the U.S. Open on Saturday and was fined $17,000 for three code violations. She lost the first set 6-4, then got a violation from the chair umpire in the second set for illegal coaching, because it was alleged that her coach, who was in attendance, was giving her advice from the stands.

Williams later she smashed her racket out of frustration, which got her another point penalty. Then, she argued with the umpire over the coaching violation, called him a “thief” for docking her a point and got a “verbal abuse” violation. That final penalty led to the automatic loss of an entire game, causing Williams to lose to to Naomi Osaka in straight sets.
