Miss Michigan Uses The Miss America Competition To Highlight The Flint Water Crisis (Video)

The annual Miss America competition took place on Sunday in Atlantic City, and at least one state’s representative was NOT messing around during her introduction!

During the introductions, Miss Michigan Emily Sioma used her ten seconds as a pulpit to preach about the fact that for four years, some residents in Michigan, specifically Flint, have not had access to clean drinking water.

From the state with 84% of the U.S. fresh water, but none for its residents to drink, I’m Miss Michigan Emily Sioma.”

Sioma’s comment is a direct reference to the ongoing Flint water crisis, which began when the city’s water source was changed from Lake Huron to the Flint River four years ago. Due to insufficient treatment, the water supplied by the Flint River contains extremely elevated levels of lead.

Sioma did not go on to win the competition, but her introduction was definitely the highlight of the competition, according to social media.
