Art enthusiasts at Sotheby’s in London were in for quite a shock when ultimate, elusive prankster and artist Banksy had his painting self-destruct seconds after it sold for over a million dollars.
Unbeknownst to the auctioneers, curators, and buyers the massive, gilded frame, hand-chosen by Banksy himself, actually concealed a shredder that would destroy the painting.
The painting, “Girl With Balloon” sold for $1.4 million and seconds after the gavel hits the art is, as Banksy shared on his Instagram, “going, going, gone…”
Sotheby’s is working with the buyer to come up with a solution but some feel the shredding makes the painting worth even more.
Safe to say Banksy is far more badass than we could ever dream of being!
