Pursuit ends with Deputy involved shooting

 One man is dead as the result of a deputy-involved shooting following a pursuit Friday afternoon, November 30, 2018.

Pennington County Sheriff Deputies were in the area of Spade Court in Rapid Valley looking for an individual. They located the vehicle and attempted to initiate a traffic stop and a pursuit ensued. Deputies pursued the suspect vehicle through Rapid Valley and Box Elder making its way to Interstate 90. The suspect reportedly fired shots at the deputies during the pursuit.

The pursuit made its way eastbound on I-90 towards New Underwood. As the vehicle left the interstate at Exit 78 deputies initiated a tactical vehicle intervention. The suspect lost control and rolled the vehicle into a ditch. The suspect exited a vehicle with a rifle in his hands. A deputy involved shooting occurred and the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. No law enforcement or bystanders were hurt during the situation.

Immediately following the shooting the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office turned over the scene to assisting South Dakota Highway Patrol and Rapid City Police Department troopers and officers. The investigation into the incident has been handed over to the Division of Criminal Investigation. Any further inquiries into this deputy-involved shooting should be directed to the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation. The suspect’s name will not be released at this time, pending notification of family.
