Police issue update on New Years Day Special Response Team callout to Racine Street

On January 1st, the Rapid City Police Department responded to Racine Street for a welfare check on 30-year-old Jordan Wounded Face of Rapid City.  The call-for-service turned into a Special Response Team callout and members of the Rapid City Police Department, Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, the South Dakota Highway Patrol, and the Rapid City Fire Department responded.

In the ensuing investigation into the incident, Wounded Face has since been arrested for Aggravated Assault on Law Enforcement, six counts of Discharge of a Firearm at an Occupied Structure, 42 counts of Reckless Discharge of a Firearm, and one count of Ingestion of a Substance (excluding alcohol) to Intoxicate.

“The actions of Mr. Wounded Face put innocent members of our community and local law enforcement into great risk as he fired bullets into the neighborhood and at officers,” says Assistant Chief Don Hedrick.  “Law enforcement is often the point of intervention for individuals in crisis and we recognize the need to work with the criminal justice system to encourage Wounded Face to get the mental health services he needs.  It was remarkable that responding law enforcement officers were able to safely subdue an active shooter without him being seriously injured or killed.”

At the conclusion of the law enforcement response to the situation, Wounded Face was placed under arrest and taken to the Pennington County Jail due to the extreme public safety risk his actions created for the community.
