Felony Child Abuse

At around 9:15 a.m. on June 3rd, police were dispatched to 640 Flormann Street for a report of a child locked in a vehicle. It was reported that the child had been in the pickup for around 2 hours with the windows rolled up. On arrival, police located the child in the pickup. The child was sweating profusely. Out of concern for the child’s health, the officer broke the truck’s side window. The child was removed from the vehicle, and the officer immediately provided water to the young child. A medical unit arrived on scene and transported the child to the hospital. ER staff indicated that had no one intervened, the situation was a life-threatening one for the child. Meanwhile, police located the child’s legal guardian inside. She was placed under arrest for Felony Child Abuse and an existing warrant. The arrestee’s name is being withheld in an effort to protect the child victim’s identity under Marsy’s Law. The SD Department of Social Services arrived at the hospital to take over care for the child.

We’re highlighting the above incident to pass along an important reminder: With the weather getting warmer, it’s important to remember that children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles. Temperatures inside a vehicle can reach-life threatening levels, and leaving a window slightly open isn’t enough to reduce the risk. Should you encounter a child or animal that appears to be in danger as a result of being in a hot car, call police immediately (911 for emergencies, 394-4131 for timely police assistance). An officer will be happy to come and assess the situation and take whatever action is necessary to preserve the well-being of the child/animal.
