Burglary

On September 29th at around 9:30 p.m., police were dispatched to a residence in the 3700 block of Chief Drive for a report of a vehicle burglary that had just taken place. Police arrived and made contact with the reporting party. The reporting party stated they were talking to a friend on their cell phone when the call cut out. When the reporting party called their friend back, the friend reported hearing an unfamiliar male voice on the other line. The reporting party determined that the call had been transferred to the hands-free system in their car and that an unknown male was in their vehicle. The reporting party then went outside to their vehicle to confront the male. The male left the area with several items from the vehicle before police arrived. Shortly before 10:00 p.m., police observed a Jeep Liberty travelling south on Haines Avenue without its headlights on. The officer observed the Jeep turn to head east on Knollwood Drive. A traffic stop was attempted on the vehicle, but it accelerated along Knollwood Drive. The driver of the Jeep disregarded the ‘road closed’ signs for construction in the area, and collided with a piece of construction equipment. The driver was ordered out of the vehicle and identified as a 17-year-old male. It was determined that the suspect driver matched the description of the suspect from the earlier vehicle burglary. The reporting party from the vehicle burglary was brought to the scene and positively identified the suspect driver as the same male that took items from their car. The victim’s stolen property was found on the suspect driver’s person. While interacting with the male, police noted the strong smell of an alcoholic beverage coming from his person. After a DUI investigation, it was determined he was too impaired to safely operate a motor vehicle. He was taken into custody for several offences related to the incidents.
