At around 9:50 a.m. on May 26th, police were dispatched to 30 Main Street to perform a welfare check on a subject seen standing in a parking space for a long period of time. Police made contact with the individual, later identified as 62-year-old James Despiegler of Rapid City. Shortly after contact, Despiegler began to assault the officer. The officer deployed his Taser and was able to get the man into custody with the help of a firefighter who had rushed over to assist. Despiegler was placed under arrest for charges that include Simple Assault on Law Enforcement, Resisting Arrest, and Obstruction.
