On July 28th at around 11:30 p.m., police were dispatched to Memorial Park for a report of a vehicle that had left the roadway and crashed into Rapid Creek. It was reported the female driver had exited the vehicle and fled the scene of the crash. A short time later, police located a female matching the description given by witnesses walking along the bike path in the area of Founders Park Drive. She was identified as 25-year-old Sarah Gerdes of Rapid City. Police noted that she was drenched in water, could not stand without swaying, and had the odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from her person. Gerdes was placed under arrest for DUI and Accident Hit and Run before being transported to the Pennington County Jail.
