The Association of Fundraising Professionals – South Dakota Chapter (AFP-SD)- Youth in Philanthropy: Observations, Offerings & Opportunities

The Association of Fundraising Professionals – South Dakota Chapter (AFP-SD) announces its first Western South Dakota monthly programming event of the New Year on Wednesday, January 9, 2019.

The program, entitled Youth in Philanthropy: Observations, Offerings & Opportunities, will engage a panel of youth and young professionals in a discussion involving philanthropy. Learn what engages them, hear about their experiences, and how their passion lifts our community through their various philanthropic activities, including fundraising, volunteering, and board involvement.

The conversation will be moderated by Kelly Gibson, Director of Projects, The Numad Group, with panelists Lilly Gibson and Maycee Wieczorek, South Dakota Governor’s Award Recipients for Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy, and Anjelica Brackins and Josh Farley, Rapid City Area Chamber of Commerce Young Professional of the Year Award Recipients.(Additional panelists may be announced.)

The presentation will be held from 11:30am – 1:00pm at the Rushmore Plaza Holiday Inn, 505 North Fifth Street, Rapid City, SD. AFP-SD members attend the function at no charge by pre-registering online at www.afpsouthdakota.afpnet.org. Non-members are welcome and encouraged to attend for $15 by pre-registering and pre-paying online atwww.afpsouthdakota.afpnet.org. Registration deadline is 12:00 noon on Monday, January 7. Meals and beverages may be ordered off a limited menu and paid by attendee. No outside food or beverage allowed.

About the Panel

Panel moderator, Kelly Gibson, is Director of Projects for The Numad Group. With over 20 years of nonprofit management experience, she has developed and administered nonprofit programs to address important community issues, particularly in rural and Native American communities, assisting hundreds of rural nonprofit organizations to design effective programs, articulate program goals, create evaluation frameworks, and build systems to continuously improve their results. Kelly has cultivated major funder relationships for more than a decade, working through local, industry and corporate networks, and supporters such as General Mills, Newman’s Own, TOMS Shoes, Columbia Sportswear and many foundations and individual philanthropists.

Lilly Gibson, a Steven’s high school senior, is passionate about homelessness, particularly as it impacts young people. As a Teen Up Ambassador, Lilly has actively served on the Homelessness Coalition Youth Task Force in Rapid City, where her advocacy to create awareness about, and dispel misperceptions regarding, the issue of homelessness has included a live Mannequin Display on Rapid City street corners showing facts about homelessness; a 15’ by 30’ public art piece in Rapid City’s Art Alley; the Glow Walk and Candlelight Vigil; and a skit on youth homelessness that was performed in front of middle and high school students in Western South Dakota and nationally. She also created the formation of the Youth Mental Health Advisory Council to help inform area mental health service providers about issues teens face. Her leadership earned her recognition at the National Youth Service Learning Conference and the South Dakota Housing Consortium, along with awards as 2016 Rapid City Youth Volunteer of the Year and 2017 South Dakota Governor’s Award Recipient for Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy.

Maycee Wieczorek is a senior at Stevens high school with plans to pursue a major in biomedical engineering. She is a participant in Teen Up, a founding member and youth coordinator of Youth Philanthropy and is a member and former co-chair of the Senior Citizen Prom Committee. She has received the Spirit of Volunteerism Award, 2018 South Dakota Governor’s Award for Youth in Philanthropy, the Spirit of Peace Award and recognition in the South Dakota Hall of Fame. Outside of volunteerism, she is captain of the Stevens Speech and Debate team, a member of Honors Orchestra, and was a delegate to ALA Girls Nation.

Anjelica Brackins received the 2016-2017 Rapid City Chamber of Commerce’s Young Professional of the Year Award and was also named one of the University of South Dakota’s Class of 2018 30 Under 30, for her accomplishments and involvement in the Rapid City community. She was also chosen to be part of the panel in picking the next South Dakota School of Mines & Technology President. In addition to her role as a Commercial Lines Customer Service Representative with Western Dakota Insurors, Anjelica is also pursuing a Master of Science Degree in Engineering Management at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology. While attending the University of South Dakota, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Relations and Advertising with a Minor in Business Administration, she was heavily involved in the orchestra and anchor, reporter, blogger, and web-editor for the award-winning student-produced television broadcast, Coyote News. In her previous position as Development Officer at The Journey Museum & Learning Center, she grew memberships by 93.5% and was chosen as the 2017 Association of South Dakota Museums Conference Marketing Speaker. She is currently a board member for both the Rapid City YMCA and the Rapid City Young Professionals.

Josh Farley is a Project Manager/Estimator at Kilowatt Electric and Financial Professional with

Prudential Advisors. He comes from a family that volunteers and was a Boy Scout and involved in the National Horseshoe Pitchers Association growing up. After graduation from the Alaska Vocational and Technical Center with a degree in industrial electricity and a minor in electronics, he was hired by the Transportation Security Administration and transferred back to South Dakota. After working for Muth Electric for numerous years, he was recruited by Modern Woodmen, where he became very involved with the Rapid City community. He was in the very first group of emerging leaders with Rapid City Collective Impact, a member of Leadership Rapid City, and involved in the Community Involvement Subcommittee of the Rapid City Young Professionals group. He is currently an honorary commander at Ellsworth Air Force Base and serves on several local boards including the Young Professionals steering committee, Rapid City Leadership Development, Rapid City Trap Club, and Elk Creek Village Sanitary District, along with volunteering at several other non-profits. He is the 2017-2018 Rapid City Chamber of Commerce Young Professional of the Year award recipient.
