Turtle Soup- “Poets of the Park”

January 19, 2018 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

The Journey Museum and Learning Center is excited to announce the next event in Spring Turtle Soup Lecture series, “Poets of thePark”. Beginning at noon on Friday, January 19, Richard Fisher will weave together the stories of Badger Clark and Peter Norbeck, two South Dakotanatives who devoted their lives to nature conservation. Last week’s Turtle Soup had more than 120 in attendance. We ask those planning to attend to reserve a seat by calling 605-394-6923 by 4 p.m. Thursday. This will ensure there is enough soup for the entire audience.

“Poets of the Park” Turtle Soup will be held in the Stanford-Adelstein Gallery located on the main level of the museum. Badger Clark and Peter Norbeck were born when Dakota was still a territory. Both were sons of prairie farmer-ministers. Peter Norbeck’s vision, design, and work produced Custer State Park, while BadgerClark, after returning to the Black Hills from years of adventuring, spent the remainder of his life in Custer State Park. Fisher’s presentation will reveal how eachman, in his own way, was a poet of the park.

The son of two South Dakotans, Richard Fisher was born in Marion, Indiana. Fisher graduated from Washington High School in Sioux Falls, then majored in American Studies at Hamline University. He completed Theological studies at The School of Theology at Drew University. After returning to South Dakota, heserved in the United Methodist Churches for nearly forty years. Fisher retired in the Black Hills in 2001 and has been a step-on guide for tour buses, a volunteerdocent at The Journey Museum, and an amateur student of Black Hills history.

Feed your mind and your belly with the Turtle Soup Lecture Series. Every Turtle Soup features a presentation on historic figures who influenced Black Hills history and includes soup from Angel’s Catering.

Admission for Turtle Soups are included in the regular cost of admission to the Journey Museum & Learning Center.
