10th Annual Nano Expo at SD Mines Highlights Tiny Technology

April 14, 2018 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

The public is invited to the 2018 Nano Expo at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology to learn how cutting-edge nanotechnologies can change the future.

The 10th annual event, which will be from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, April 14, will show how small-scale technology is making a big impact. Graduate students studying nanoscience and nanoengineering will showcase their work in the Bump Lounge of the Surbeck Center (campus map here). Refreshments will be provided. Admission is free.

South Dakota Mines’ Nanoscience and Nanoengineering Ph.D. program is an interdisciplinary doctoral program focusing science and engineering on the nano-scale, a tiny world a hundred thousand times smaller than a human hair, where even a dust mite would appear as a giant. Student researchers visualize life at the cellular level, and manipulate matter at these nano-length scales, developing new technologies and unlocking the secrets of the nano-world. SD Mines’ nano program offers a research-intensive degree, with faculty and students from traditional science and engineering backgrounds working in interdisciplinary teams to tackle issues such as the causes and cures of osteoarthritis, more efficient solar energy and intra-cellular cinematography (imaging the inner workings of live cells) to understand the immune system.

Research to be presented at the 10th annual expo includes a wide range of topics: developing genetically encoded sensors to image intra-cellular forces in live cells, nanofiber composites for solar cells and sensors, nano-structured solar cells and nano-electronics, upconverting nanoparticles for deep tissue imaging applications, volumetric imaging of living cells, thermal insulating composites for space habitats and more.

South Dakota Mines Nanoscience and Nanoengineering is an active participant in the statewide research center BioSystems Networks / Translational Research (BioSNTR), leveraging imaging, informatics and systems biology towards advancing bio-science and bio-technology in South Dakota.
