2018 One Book South Dakota Discussion

September 13, 2018 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Democracy falters “if there is no steady supply of trustworthy and relevant news.”—Journalist Walter Lippman

This year’s One Book South Dakota, “Informing the News: The Need for Knowledge-Based Journalism” by Thomas E Patterson, addresses the crucial role of integrity and knowledge in the news upon which we depend. Add your voice to the statewide conversation Thursday, September 13 from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. at the downtown library (610 Quincy Street, upstairs), when South Dakota Humanities Council Scholar Molly Barari leads a discussion of this timely book.

Thomas E. Patterson is Bradlee Professor of Government and the Press at the Harvard Kennedy School and is the award-winning author of “Out of Order.” His research has been funded by the Ford, Markle, Smith-Richardson, Pew, Knight, Carnegie, and National Science foundations. Patterson graduated from South Dakota State University in Brookings and received his PhD from the University of Minnesota in 1971.

Book discussion leader and South Dakota Humanities Council Scholar Molly Barari earned her Master of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing from Wilkes University in 2017. Barari teaches community and memoir writing workshops in Rapid City.

This program is supported in part by the South Dakota Humanities Council.
