The Spearfish Disc Golf Association is hosting the BHSU Spring Fling disc golf tournament on Saturday, April 14 at the campus disc golf course. The format of the tournament is two rounds of disc golf followed by lunch and a players party and awards ceremony at Crow Peak Brewery. Walk-up registration is from 8:30 am to 9:30 am at the Welcome Board near Tee 1. A shotgun start at 10:00 am will be followed with lunch at Bunky’s BBQ at 2:00 pm. All amateur players receive a custom disc, lunch and beverage and a chance to win over $ 300.00 in prizes. The divisions are as follows: Open (professionals) Men, Masters and Women and Amateur Men, Women and Intermediate Men and Women. The cost to enter the tournament is $ 25.00 for amateurs and $ 50.00 for open players. The prize sponsors are the BHSU School of Business and the BHSU Bookstore. This is a PDGA sanctioned C Tier event; non PDGA members must pay a $ 10.00 fee in addition to the entry fee.
Disc golf is like traditional ball golf in that players attempt to throw their disc into a metal basket in the least amount of throws. The BHSU disc golf course is the first disc golf course in South Dakota (1995) and the 5th oldest on-campus disc golf course in the nation. The 20 hole campus course features new powder dipped bright yellow baskets, cement tee pads and state of the art tee signs promoting the University Academic programs and the local attractions in Spearfish. A wide selection of disc are available for sale at the BHSU bookstore.
Due to the success of the campus disc golf course, the city of Spearfish funded the baskets for the 27 hole Spearfish Canyon Disc golf course, now rated in the top 50 disc golf courses in the nation, out of over 5,000 disc golf courses in the USA.
