The public is invited to attend the Black Hills Symphony Chamber Orchestra (BHSO) performing on the stage of the Historic Homestake Opera House (HHOH) for a 2018 concert kickoff event titled The Epiphany Concert: Angels Project on Sunday, January 7 at 2:00 pm at the HHOH at 313 W. Main Street.
The Epiphany Concert: Angels Project will be conducted by Bruce Knowles, who has worked as orchestra director at Central High School for more than thirty years, developing a reputation for excellent, award-winning orchestras.
The long-awaited restoration of the interior of the HHOH theater is underway with the completion of the north and the south lower theater walls beautifully restored to appear as they did to an grand opening day crowd in 1914.
“This is a very important time in this building’s life,” says Sarah Carson, HHOH executive director. “This 2018 project is an important milestone in South Dakota history, Lead history, and Homestake Gold Mine history, and it’s important also for our community members and people who worked on this building before us. People now see the inspiring changes, and that progress is a reward for all of us.”
The Epiphany Concert: Angels Project kickoff event which will help support the large project ahead, which involves restoring the large intricate plasterwork opening of the stage, called a “proscenium”, in which the plasterwork will be repaired and replicated to look as it did in 1914 based on research, photography, and paint samples. The name for the concert came from the January 6 date celebrated by Christians all over the world as Epiphany, meaning “a manifestation of spiritual beings” since the elaborate original plasterwork to be restored includes the 1914 angels that grace the top of the opening of the stage.
Carlson adds there has been a series of special events in celebration of restoration projects every step of the way in the last 7 years, and especially thanks the City of Lead, loyal HHOH annual members, and the Adams-Mastrovich Family Foundation for their ongoing support.
Audiences can expect a grand repertoire from the 40-member BHSO Chamber music performance and will include the following pieces:

Warlock – Bethlehem Down
Respighi – Ancient Airs & Dances Suite 3
Hovhaness – Prayer for St. Gregory
Corelli – Concerto grosso in G minor, Op 6 No 8 Fatto per la note di Natale
Handel – Arrival of the Queen of Sheba from Solomon HWV 67
Admission is $25 for adults, $20 for members, and $15 for students, and $10 for children 12 and younger. Tickets are available at the door, online at HomestakeOperaHouse.org, or by credit card by calling the HHOH office at 605-584-2067. Seating is first-come first served and reservations are not required. Beer, wine, soda, and water is available for purchase.

The Black Hills Symphony Orchestra (BHSO) is a community orchestra located in Rapid City, SD with the mission to provide the finest in orchestral performance and symphonic music education for the people of the Black Hills region. The orchestra has grown substantially, now employing approximately 90 musicians. Each year, the BHSO presents a program series of symphony concerts and has collaborated with other Black Hills area arts organizations to present larger productions.
The new Interpretive Exhibit will be open on the second floor which showcases the entire history of the Homestake Opera House & Recreation Center, historic treasures, archival imagery, and film.
Proceeds from the event benefit the next phase of the interior restoration project and supporting operations. Free parking is located behind the building, on Main Street, and lot parking within four blocks or less from the theater. The building is wheelchair accessible and assistive listening devices are also available.
