The Pennington County Sheriff’s Office and the Rapid City Police Department would like the public to join in this year’s Denim Day activities. Wednesday, April 27th, has been set aside to support survivors of sexual abuse.
Why wear denim? In 1998, the Italian Supreme Court overturned a rape conviction because the victim’s jeans were “too tight”, reasoning that she must have consented by helping him take them off.
Enraged by the verdict, women protested by wearing jeans on the steps of the Parliament building. Wearing jeans on Denim Day has become an international symbol to raise awareness and support sexual assault survivors.
