“When I was 12, my parents had two talks with me. One was the usual birds and the bees. The other talk was about what to do if a cop stopped me.” Timely, important and riveting, “The Hate U Give” by Angie Thomas is our book café selection for May. Get behind the headlines and sound bites as you see the world through the eyes of 16-year-old Starr Carter. Then meet us at Harriet & Oak Café & Roaster (329 Main Street, downtown) Thursday, May 25, 6 – 7 p.m., for coffee, tea and conversation.
The Hate U Give explores racism and police violence in Starr Carter’s world as she moves between the gang-ravaged area where she lives and the suburban prep school she attends where she’s one of only a few black students.
Angie Thomas was born, raised and still resides in Jackson, Mississippi.
Attendees will be eligible to draw for a glass coffee mug and gift card.
