Haley Bonar returns to Rapid City, the first stop on her West Coast “Impossible Dream” tour, promoting her 7th full length studio album. Recently reviewed in Pitfork, contributor Evan Rytlewski wrote, “Haley Bonar’s Impossible Dream is a brisk half-hour of barbed power-pop tunes that sting so sweetly that it’s only after the fact you consider you might need a tetanus shot.”
Bonar says, “Everybody wants a story. Something to sell. I’m here to tell you that there isn’t one with this album, at least in the traditional sense, but ten. Perhaps each of them contain more stories, sitting inside each other like nesting dolls.” The songs are about coming of age, teenage parenthood, the terror of jealousy and suspicion, and growing up in the Black Hills. “But what I write is borne of my own set of memories and ideas, and once they are released into the world, they do not belong to me anymore. The interpretation is all yours, therefore these stories are yours.”
This Black Hills native has been writing songs and singing Indy, Alternative and Country for as long as she can remember. Her music has been called evocative and romantic, stinging and darkly funny. Bonar tours widely, earning praise from the likes of NPR, Pitchfork and Time Out New York. She has consistently landed on year-end favorite lists to include The Star Tribune, NPR’s All Songs Considered, Pulse magazine, The Onion, Village Voice and Wondering Sound. Boner’s music has been featured on episodes of Showtime’s The United States of Tara and MTV’s Teen Mom.
