Poker Alice

The Journey Museum and Learning Center is going green this week to celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day. On Friday, March 16th beginning at Noon, join Chuck Rambow as he presents the life of Alice Ivers, better know as Poker Alice. The daughter of Irish immigrants, Poker Alice was a successful poker player and business woman who lived in Deadwood and Sturgis. Rambow will share stories that his mother, who know Poker Alice, shared with him.

“Poker Alice” Turtle Soup will be held in the Stanford Adelstein Gallery located on the main floor of the museum. Irish stew will be served for lunch, and attendees are invitedto wear green to kick off Saint Patrick’s Day weekend. Alice Ivers found success as a poker player, winning thousands and then splurging on expensive trips and clothing. Evenso, she opened her own “Poker Palace” saloon in the early 1900s in Fort Meade and became a business woman known for her unconventional management style.

Charles “Chuck” Rambow was born in Sturgis, SD where his mother knew Poker Alice. He taught Black Hills Native American History, American History and World History atSturgis High School and later taught history at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee and at Black Hills State University. After retiring from formal teaching he served as Director of the Old Fort Meade Museum. Rambow spent over 30 summers as a Naturalist at Bear Butte State Park. He is the author of Bear Butte: Journeys to the SacredMountain. Rambow is a founding member of the Black Hills Archeology Society and Sheriff of the Westerners Corral #8, a local group of Western writers.

Feed your mind and your belly with the Turtle Soup Lecture Series. Every Turtle Soup features a presentation on historic figures who influenced Black Hills history and includes soup from Angel’s Catering. Admission for Turtle Soups are included in the regular cost of admission to the Journey Museum & Learning Center.
