The History of the Hiawatha Indian Insane Asylum

October 7, 2018 @ 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm

The Journey Museum and Learning Center is excited to announce the first event in its Fall Learning Forum series, ‘The History of the HiawathaInsane Asylum’. Beginning at 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 7th, Anne Dilenschneider and Jerry Fogg will share the story of the Hiawatha Insane Asylum located in Canton, SD, that housed Native Americans. This program is sponsored in part by the South Dakota Humanities Council.

Known for its mistreatment of mental patients that marked a tragic period in American history, the Hiawatha Indian Insane Asylum operated from 1902 to 1933.Dilenschneider and Fogg will talk about the asylum during its years in operation as well as the shared healing process that came after its closing.

Anne Dilenschneider, PhD, is a counselor and researcher whose work focuses on restorative justice. She grew up in Ohio and was one of the first women graduates of The University of Notre Dame. Dilenschneider is one of

the Keepers of the Canton Native Asylum Story, a group that is engaged nationally in reconciliation and education about the South Dakota asylum that was the linchpin offederal “Indian” policy in the early 1900s.

Jerry Fogg is a Yankton Sioux artist who grew up on the Crow Creek Indian Reservation. He says the process of creating art helps him focus on the talent and purpose WakanTanka (the Creator) gave him – a gift that is meant to be shared with others, particularly the people of South Dakota. Fogg is a member of the Ihanktowan Nakota Oyate and resides in Sioux Falls working as a cultural historian.

Admission is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors, half-off for members & free for students with a paid adult/senior admission (includes museum admission).
