Pursuit

On January 14th around 2:30 a.m., police observed a Chevy Silverado pickup travelling northbound on Haines Avenue at a high rate of speed. A traffic stop was initiated on the pickup and it came to a stop in the parking lot of 1312 Haines Avenue. As the officer began to approach the vehicle, the pickup began driving again and exited the parking lot. Police pursued the vehicle northbound on Haines Avenue as it turned eastbound on to I-90. While on I-90, several attempts were made to deploy stop sticks in an effort to bring the pursuit to an end, none of which were successful. The pickup turned to proceed northbound at exit 67B and then north again at Tower Road. In the area of Tower Road and 224th Street, the vehicle came to a stop. The driver, later identified as 41-year-old Mark Veley of Rapid City, was ordered out of the vehicle and was taken into custody. Police noted the smell of an alcoholic beverage coming from Veley’s person. After the subsequent DUI investigation, Valey was placed under arrest for DUI, Eluding, Speeding, and a Warrant.
