Suspect charged in trooper assault

Saturday night, May 27, 2017, a South Dakota Highway Patrol Trooper was assaulted and dragged as his patrol vehicle was stolen. A warrant has been issued for the suspect identified as 39 year old Joshua Two Bulls.

About 7:30 pm, May 27, the trooper initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle at South Highway 79 and Spring Creek Road. During the stop, Two Bulls was able to get control of the trooper’s vehicle.

The trooper was dragged as Two Bulls tried to flee the scene.  The trooper fired his duty weapon at the patrol vehicle in an attempt to disable it. The trooper’s vehicle eventually stopped in a nearby creek embankment. The trooper was taken to the hospital, treated and released.

Two Bulls was able to get back into his vehicle and leave the area. Later that evening, with the cooperation of the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety (OST DPS), the suspected vehicle was located on the reservation and two subjects were taken into custody without incident on tribal charges. Both were released. OST DPS assisted with the investigation.

At the time of the incident, Two Bulls had an active warrant as a Parole Absconder out of the state of Nebraska. Local Law Enforcement now have an additional arrest warrant charging Two Bulls with Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer, Grand Theft and Escape.
