Car vs. pedestrian crash

At around 7:50 a.m. this morning, police were dispatched to the 400 block of E Indiana Street for a report of a car versus pedestrian crash involving a child. By the time police arrived, a parent of the struck child had already departed to transport the child to the hospital. After speaking with witnesses, police determined a Chevy Tahoe was eastbound in the 400 block of E. Indiana Street. The Tahoe attempted to pass a van which was parked along the south curb of the street. Just as the Tahoe passed the van, a child darted into the roadway from in front of the van and was struck by the Tahoe. There is no crosswalk in the area of where the crash occurred and police found that the driver of Tahoe was not at fault for the crash. It was determined the child only received minor injuries.

It’s important to teach young children the proper use of crosswalks. Additionally, kids should practice looking both ways before crossing a street as they head to school. If, for some reason, a crosswalk is not available, it’s advisable that a parent walk with that child to cross the street safely.
